Mary Lou Decossaux (1957-2011) received her degrees from Long Island University and the Sorbonne. She wrote a biography of a folk hero from her family’s native region of Ariège, France, Sapou: Colporteur de l’Ariège au temps des montreurs d’ours (1995). She later settled in Richmond, VA and founded the Neighborhood Resource Center of Greater Fulton, which filled an educational and cultural void in this impovrished community where she also made her home. She received many prestigious awards for her tireless work on behalf of people in great need. Her book of poems was written during the period of her early days in Richmond.
